I-MED Pharma: Canadian Innovation to Soothe Sore Eyes
Our optical professionals have noticed an increase in patients experiencing dry eyes and eyestrain. Fortunately, they have a growing range of technologies available to soothe patients’ discomfort, including solutions developed by Quebec-based I-MED Pharma, which make a real difference.
For over 30 years, the Montreal-based company has been designing diagnostic and treatment solutions for ocular surface diseases, innovative artificial tears, and ocular hygiene products. I-MED is a pioneer in treating dry eye syndrome and offers effective solutions to eye disorders like cataracts, corneal degeneration, glaucoma, and meibomian gland dysfunction.
Montreal Born and Bred
In 1989 Dr. Ilan Hofmann, who holds a PhD and BSc in biochemistry, teamed up with Maureen Blanchard to open a branch of France’s Laboratoires Domilens in Montreal. Fascinated with eye treatment research, Dr. Hofmann began developing innovative solutions for the medical and surgical fields. His goal was to design top quality care products to make a difference in people’s lives.
They bought out the company in 1994 to make it a wholly-owned, completely independent Canadian firm, which they renamed I-MED Pharma. Today the Montreal-based company has 38 employees and a presence in Canada, the United States, and England.
Science Front and Centre
The company has chosen to invest heavily in research and development to create highly specialized products not offered anywhere else on the market.
The I-MED team has a special relationship with professionals, which opens the door to research projects on pathologies actually experienced by patients. “A lot of our ideas come from doctors who have specific needs,” says Dr. Hofmann. As a result, I-MED’s solutions are better suited to alleviate patients’ concerns.
