As they say: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. The summer holiday is the perfect time to take your fashion cues from the world’s hippest cities. Here’s our summer style guide.
Have a soft spot for architecture and Scandinavia? Copenhagen is the place for you! Let yourself be inspired by the clean lines of Danish design. Above all, keep it modern. That means eye-catching, loose-fitting pieces in classic blacks or whites. And please leave your sweatpants at home! Sneakers in neutral colours add a nice casual touch, even with a dress—dresses with athletic shoes are all the rage this season. When it comes to accessories, less is more. Same goes for your hair. Just air dry and go, for that “dishevelled” look the Danes simply adore. Remember: It’s all about attitude, and in Copenhagen laid back is the only way to go.
The city of love awaits! Want to look every bit as chic as the Parisians? Stick with classic pieces that work for you. A fitted pant, white blouse, A-line skirt, and black jacket are just the ticket. Think Audrey Tautou and Coco Chanel. When it comes to colour, stick with pastels and neutrals: Parisians don’t like standing out. You can add a touch of romance with a few well-chosen accessories and understated pearls. A spray of Chanel No. 5 and the tourists will be asking you directions to the Eiffel Tower!
Next stop: The Big Apple. It’s a city everyone has to see at least once in their life. Prepare to be dazzled by the teeming diversity of the five boroughs. New York is a walking city, so you need relaxed urban apparel. A pair of shorts or jean overalls with a baggy shirt can be a great look. Add comfy shoes like sneakers or sandals with straps and you’re ready to hit the streets of Manhattan without breaking a sweat. When it comes to accessories, a messenger bag and pair of vintage sunglasses are just what you need to complete your look.
For some quality R&R and a place to recharge your batteries, you just can’t beat Bali. Between the beaches and the temples, you won’t ever want to leave. Don’t forget the basics: your bathing suit, a maxi dress, some good sunscreen, and of course your sunglasses. Since you’re not far from the jungle, floral prints are a great way to go. On the accessory front, mala meditation bead bracelets are big this year. Quebec companies like Fay With Love have some beautiful ones. Think Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love.
