A Day in the Life of an Optician at Opto-Réseau
What does a typical day look like for an optician at Opto-Réseau?
Getting to Know Your Clients
The role of an optician at Opto-Réseau goes far beyond simply selling glasses or contact lenses. You truly get to know your clients to better advise them. Through this deep understanding, the optician guides their clients toward the best optical solutions, whether it's contact lenses, prescription glasses, or sunglasses, always with the goal of improving their comfort and vision daily.
Here are a few questions you might ask to better understand their needs:
"What sports do you play?"
"How many hours per day do you spend in front of a screen?"
"What is the biggest discomfort you feel with your current glasses?"
"Do you drive often?"
Selecting the Best Product and Fitting Lenses
At Opto-Réseau, the optician selects the appropriate lenses based on each client’s prescription. They also cut the lenses to fit perfectly within the chosen frame, ensuring precise centering. Their goal is to guarantee optimal visual comfort, which is our priority.
Helping Clients Adjust to Contact Lenses
Supporting clients also means showing patience and empathy, especially when it comes to first-time contact lens wearers. This new practice can take time before one feels completely comfortable. Teaching proper techniques, offering reassurance, and building confidence are integral parts of the optician’s role in our clinics.
This personalized guidance offers a valuable opportunity to build relationships with each client, contributing to Opto-Réseau’s culture.
Participating in Frame Selection
In our clinics, opticians don’t just advise or sell products; they actively participate in selecting the frames offered in-store. By working closely on inventory management with the clinic’s owner, they bring their market expertise and insights on local clientele preferences.
This is a real strength at Opto-Réseau, where the optician plays a central role in product decisions, ensuring that the selection always meets the specific needs and expectations of the clinic's clientele.
Offering Fashion and Style Advice
One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is helping clients choose their frames. Since glasses are a central part of their face, it’s essential that each client feels comfortable and likes what they see in the mirror.
Thanks to Opto-Réseau’s expert visagist training program, our opticians develop genuine expertise in fashion and style. This allows them to suggest frames that reflect each client’s unique personality, while considering facial features and current trends.
This personalized approach goes far beyond simply selling glasses. It creates a unique customer experience, where each person feels heard and thoughtfully advised.
"Having a sense of style and a flair for fashion is an asset to join Opto-Réseau. We look for opticians who are both technically skilled and creative."
- Sophie Racine, Director of Human Resources
Working Closely with the Clinic Owner
At Opto-Réseau, opticians work closely with the clinic’s owner, fostering smooth communication and quick decision-making.
Since each Opto-Réseau clinic is independent, business decisions and daily organization are made directly by each clinic. By collaborating directly with the owner, you can act concretely to better meet your clients’ needs. This direct impact is a key differentiator at Opto-Réseau.
What is an Optician?
As an optician, you are a dedicated vision professional offering quality solutions. If you want to work in healthcare without going through the long path of medical studies, this profession is a great option to make a tangible difference. As a specialist in corrective optical solutions, such as glasses and contact lenses, your role is to interpret optometrists' and ophthalmologists' prescriptions to best advise your clients.
Unlike the optometrist, who focuses on eye exams and diagnosing eye conditions, the optician specializes in the technical and aesthetic aspects of visual correction. You ensure that each client receives glasses or lenses that not only improve their vision but also match their style and provide optimal comfort.
What Studies Are Required to Become an Optician at Opto-Réseau?
To become an optician, you must obtain a college diploma (DEC) in Optics and Eyewear. This program, offered in three CEGEPs in the province, combines theoretical courses on optics, physics, and eye anatomy with practical workshops on frame fabrication and adjustment. Additionally, students develop advanced customer service skills paired with sales techniques.
After obtaining the DEC, aspiring opticians must register with the Ordre des opticiens d’ordonnances du Québec, which grants them the right to practice under current professional standards. As you can see, this profession is regulated, requiring technical skills and social aptitude.
Continuing education is also a key aspect of the profession. Rapid technological advances in optics require opticians to stay up to date on new trends, innovative materials, and cutting-edge techniques to offer the best possible service to their clients. This is a central aspect at Opto-Réseau, where continuing education is readily available to opticians.
